Could you understand me leaving?
A downloadable game art for Windows
A home exists as a reflection of those who've lived in it. Spaces share the personalities, dreams and lives of those that have, meticulously over years, adorned its walls and dictated its layout & purpose. How does a home dictate the way we act, how does it affect the perception of our memories? In “Could You Understand Me Leaving?” an empty house screams with a blaring alarm, begging for attention over and over. Asking what can we infer about the life and the motivations of those that occupied this space. Who implemented this alarm? Who was it intended for? What are they trying to tell us? Can we turn it off? How can I ignore it?
Could you understand me leaving? recreates the artist's childhood home; Using nostalgia and the rules based nature of games in order to explore conditional love, choice & familiar expectations. As the play explores the house and magical portals beyond, they are interrupted by a repetitive alarm going off throughout the game world. An alarm which can only be turned off by returning home. I love how this explores the 'rules' of a home through game mechanics. As a fellow dev working on a lo-fi horror, I find this approach to environmental storytelling incredibly inspiring. The house as a reflection of personality isn't just a setting, it’s a character. Great job on the residency project!
